What is Philo and Sophie?
Philo and Sophie is a character education program for kids in kindergarten through grade 3. Through puppets, songs, and short animated stories, two curious friends help young children explore big ideas in a way that feels like play, not a lesson. Kids meet Philo, who asks all the “why” questions, and Sophie, who helps make sense of the answers. Behind the fun is something serious: helping little ones build the habits of heart and mind that grow into strong character.
What ages and grades is it for?
It is designed for children in kindergarten through third grade, roughly ages five to eight. The stories, songs, and pacing are built for how young children actually learn, through repetition, humor, music, and characters they grow to love. If you have a curious four-year-old or an older sibling who still enjoys the songs, they will get plenty out of it too. The heart of it is teaching virtues to children at the age when those lessons take root most deeply.
What will my child actually learn?
Your child learns the building blocks of happiness, logic, and respect for every person. They discover that true happiness comes from love and helping others, not just from getting what they want. They begin to grasp, in kid-sized pieces, that truth is real and worth seeking. And they practice the everyday move at the center of good character: shifting from “what do I want?” to “what is the good thing to do?” It is values education for elementary students, delivered with a light touch.
How does it teach right from wrong without being preachy?
Through story, not scolding. When Sophie does not want to follow a rule, or Frank the monster thinks more “stuff” will make him happy, kids watch the consequences play out and figure out the lesson alongside the characters. That is how teaching kids right from wrong actually sticks at this age, by letting them feel the “aha” themselves rather than being told. The puppets do the heavy lifting, so the message lands as fun instead of a lecture.
Is this screen time I can feel good about?
Yes. Plenty of children’s content fills time. This fills it with purpose. Every episode is short, warm, and built around an idea worth your child carrying into the rest of their day, kindness, honesty, the worth of every person. So when the screen goes off, the conversation keeps going. Many parents tell us their kids start singing the songs and repeating the big ideas at the dinner table, which is exactly the point.
Can I use it at home, or is it just for classrooms?
Both. Parents use Philo and Sophie at home as a gentle, everyday way to talk about character with young kids, no teaching experience required. The same program also works as an elementary character curriculum in classrooms and as a homeschool character curriculum for families who want structure. Whether you are watching one episode on the couch or running a full lesson, it is built to flex to how you want to use it.
