LPA Topic Previews

Abortion advocates will often argue that it is better that a child be aborted than be born disabled, poor, or unwanted by her parents.

At its heart, this belief comes from narrow definitions of the terms “quality of life” and “success.” If a successful life is defined as being admired by others for what one accomplishes, then a disability, which threatens a person’s abilities, limits how successful a person can be. Similarly, if the highest quality of life is found in eliminating pain and suffering, then poverty and illness will prevent a person from attaining a sufficient quality of life.

But, by expanding the definitions of “quality of life” and “success” we see that life – even when it involves suffering and disappointments – can be profoundly meaningful and good.

Does Abortion Improve Quality of Life?

Uterine lavage, a recently developed alternative to in vitro fertilization (IVF), promises, according to its creators, to offer significant benefits over IVF. But does this make it a more ethical procedure? Healing the Culture president, Camille Pauley, lays open the ethical and moral problems with uterine lavage, the truth about its so-called benefits.
